Summer is the perfect season for performing outdoor tasks such as roofing maintenance. In today’s post, the local roofers at Affordable Roofing, Siding and Gutters share tips on how to keep your roof in good shape throughout the summer season.
Clean the gutters and drains. Gutters are an important part of your roof. Together with your home’s drainage system, they prevent rainwater from causing damage to your home’s foundations. Leaves, needles and debris can pile up in a few months’ time, and if left undisturbed, they can cause clogging. You can either clean the gutters yourself with a sturdy ladder and safety gear or you can hire a professional to clean them for you. Consider investing in gutter protection systems like Gutter Guard RX, which stops solid matter from entering the gutter troughs, preventing clogged gutters.
Inspect the roof for damage. Roof repair should be left to roofing professionals like us. You can still keep an eye on your roof, however, and inspect it for issues that require repair. A clear summer day is perfect for such inspections. Train a pair of binoculars on the roof’s surface and look for signs of damage, such as cracked, blistered or cupping shingles. Make a note of flashing that’s missing, corroded or has been knocked out of place. If you notice these issues or anything else that appears to be roofing damage, call a roofing professional for repairs.
Check the attic ventilation. Without proper ventilation, hot, humid air can get trapped in the attic and cause damage to the roofing insulation and support structure. It can also radiate heat back into your indoor living spaces and raise your home’s cooling requirements. A typical roof ventilation system consists of two parts: exhaust vents at the ridges and intake vents at the soffits.
The first thing you’ll notice when you climb into the attic is the temperature and humidity. Ideally, it shouldn’t be that much different from the outdoors. If it’s too hot and humid, your attic may not be getting enough ventilation. If the attic ventilation seems to be in order—you can tell by the air currents coming from the soffits—but the attic still feels too warm, you may need to have exhaust fans installed in your attic.
